Health authorities in Mauritius have set up a
Complaints Bureau in each of the five regional hospitals of the island
nation. "This service, which till now was centralised at the health
ministry in Port Louis, is regionalised to offer a better and efficient
service to the population," an official at the ministry said
Thursday.
The bureaux also offered 24-hour telephone services to enable people to register their complaints. A non-governmental-organisation, Comite Amelioration de la Sante (CAS), which had in the past asked for such a service, said it was now satisfied with this act. "We now want the introduction of a health card for every patient visiting the casualty departments of hospitals," CAS chairman Serge Rayapoulle said. Do you think the staff for each new Complaints Bureau needs to be qualified so as to take appropriate measures for each case? Do you have the feeling that this good initiative will really help in improving the way patients are treated? Many people say they are treated "like animals" in hospitals...Do you think these bureaux will be other places where the hospital patients or visitors will be neglected; will the complaints be taken seriously? Do you think a Complaints Bureau would be needed if the hospital's staff had a perfect training before being employed? What other improvements do you think are necessary in the Health sector in Mauritius?
